Abolish Carceral Social Work

Friday, March 3rd, 2023 - Synchronous Online

12:00 - 5:00pm EST

4 MI SW Ethics CEs

Presented by Ruth Spalding, LMSW, CAADC from True Node Therapy, LLC

Hosted by Odyssey Sexual Health, PLLC

This continuing education* course is for the abolition curious who wish to explore how to integrate abolitionist principles into their social work practice. It is an opportunity to think about abolition, social work, and to explore how “carceral logic” impacts society inside and outside of prison systems.  We will name how the very existence of prisons and white supremacy culture (even if social workers do not operate within prisons) is at odds with the ethics and values of our profession and illustrate how abolition of the prison industrial complex aligns more closely with social work values for social justice, self-determination, honoring the dignity and worth of the human person, and the importance of human relationships. By the end of the training, participants will have a better understanding of social work within carceral systems, implications for social work ethics, and imagine abolition centered approaches to our work including approaches to suicide safety planning.

This course is appropriate for anyone who works with "mandated" clients from the court system, substance use, or any client base who often interacts with the legal system in any clinical setting would benefit from this course. It is also a starting point for folks to begin thinking through abolitionist and liberation focused approaches to social work practice.

The presenter, Ruth Spaliding, LMSW, worked in corrections and now works in private practice. Ruth has chosen to donate her portion of the ticket price (ticket price - overhead and hourly administrative labor) to organizations focused on the liberation of incarcerated folx.

Sliding scale fee & scholarships available (contact us @ education@odysseysexualhealth.com for more info)
